New York Public Library

On the eve of primaries in Florida, Ohio, and Arizona, Issenberg speaks with the New York Times’ senior political correspondent about how political campaigns can fight back against disinformation.

Ten years ago, Sasha Issenberg’s The Victory Lab was hailed as a groundbreaking examination of the data-driven revolution that was transforming American political campaigns. In The Lie Detectives, he returns to the cutting edge of political innovation to reveal how campaigns are navigating the era’s most pressing challenge: how to win in a world awash in lies. The book presents a vivid snapshot of Democratic politics in the Trump years and a warning for what may come in 2024.

Sasha will be in conversation with Maggie Haberman, political correspondent for the New York Times, about a political class trying to come to terms with an exploding social media landscape and using every weapon in its arsenal to counter the biggest threat it has ever faced to its way of doing business and winning power.

Sasha Issenberg is a journalist and the author of four previous books, including The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns and, most recently, The Engagement: America’s Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage. He teaches in the UCLA Department of Political Science and is a correspondent for Monocle. His work has also appeared in New York, The New York Times Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek and Politico Magazine.

Maggie Haberman is a senior political correspondent for the New York Times. She was part of a team that won a 2018 Pulitzer Prize for reporting on Donald Trump's campaign's ties to Russia. She wrote the New York Times bestseller Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, which was published in 2022. Prior to the Times, Haberman worked for Politico, the New York Daily News and the New York Post.
