Join us on Tuesday, February 13 from 6-7pm ET for a virtual conversation about the current state of Egyptian society and culture thirteen years after protests led to President Mubarak’s historic resignation and following the country’s recent election in which President el-Sisi took 89.6% of the vote as war continues in the region.
In her recent book, Laughter in the Dark: Egypt to the Tune of Change, Yasmine El Rashidi gives a memorable and fresh account of the youth movement in Egypt through the hip-hop, rap, and trap music scene. Her riveting portrait of the country illustrates how young musicians give voice to the rising dissatisfaction in her country, where inflation is 35% and deadlines for paying back at least $42 billion loom.
El Rashidi will be joined by Wafaa El-Sadr, Executive Vice President for Columbia Global and Director of ICAP, and David D. Kirkpatrick, staff writer for The New Yorker, who covered the Arab Spring as the former Cairo bureau chief for the New York Times, for a conversation moderated by Columbia Global Reports Director Nicholas Lemann.
